Undertown
Sy-fi steampunk world holding three character sheets and designs. Lyall and Ray along with their adopted sibling Ben look to create a fair and equal world for all. But how can they do so with just the three of them? Take a look at the main characters of UnderTown.
RAY
Rachel aka Ray. The ‘mother’ of the group, Ray is a character that could have played two very different roles. Her design I went for a much rougher look. As a Scamper of the city, I wanted to make sure she valued her job or mission over style. Dirty and a bleak color palette is a look into not just her occupation of hiding in the shadows but also of how she sees herself and the world around her. A character that seems strong but on the inside is struggling to keep smiling for her ‘brothers.’
LYALL
Lyall aka Inu. Lyall was one of the characters that went through some of the most changes in design, story, and elements. Through the process I jumped around with the underline question of what his overall purpose would be. With that I finally came to a design that would bring light into a dark world. Sharp lines with rounded edges that would blend his design into his environment and his mechanic occupation. Lyall is the life and energy of his ‘family’ and I wanted to communicate that through his design by giving him an over the top go lucky, happy feeling through his clothing choice and body language.
BEN
Ben aka White Rabbit. With his design I looked to create a strong but easily overlooked character. With him I focused on blending his rounded and soft features with sharp and crisp forms to make a strong contrast between his organic and technological elements. Along with his render sheet are a few of my process sketches with him. I originally started out complex with his design but soon found it overwhelming to his character. I turned to more simplistic forms in order to create a more fluid, clean and clear character design.
Hydon
Fantasy and folk lore based. Balios looks to reunite with his apprentice and adopted son before the spread of rumors and lies dooms this young child too. Take a look at the two main characters of Hydon.
NICHOLAS
Nicholas is a young hybrid of demons and angels. His design revolves around contrasting and complementing his co-character Balios. Through color, shape, and size, his form focuses on sleek and flowing elements. With his design I looked deeper into researching animal skeletons and structures to design a realistic way for humans to have wings. The largest influence for his muscle structure was bats. Bats have a wider rib cage in order to give more room for muscle. Following that I flatten his chest and gave him larger hips to accommodate for muscle structures so his wings would have the necessary elements to seemingly work.
BALIOS
Balios is the depiction of a fallen angel. Designing Balios was a balancing of realistic lines and shape with slight exaggerations with his body and features. Keeping a believable build was vital along with small altered features to make him look slightly larger, such as his shoulder horns, enlarged veins and larger sternum that hold his crystal. His design elements represent a juxtaposition of good and evil forms. One example being his horns, made to mimic a halo, something he once had. Overall his design depicts a rough and battle ready individual but in reality is a man with a heart and soul made of gold.
Tellers Forest
Mysterious and wonder. The teller of the forest is an elusive man, told to have grown up with humans before strangely disappearing into the forest after his 6th birthday. Take a look at the main character of Teller of the Forest.
CYRUS
Within the forest, hidden deep among the trees, live the fae. Rare and mystical. Beautiful yet dangerous. Some believe they never existed, only living within the tales of old. But few know, for few have seen. For we few that sought out to not harm but simply meet, got the opportunity to truly see. That down by the misted creek, between the rocks lies a magic pool and its keeper. There to answer your questions and queries. To tell you truths and warnings.
